    Vegan Indian Cooking Class

Mukti's-Kitchen-CollageInstead of dinner and a movie, opt for an Indian cooking class… The gift that keeps on giving. Our sister Riana better known as Chef Riana gifted us a personal vegan cooking class at Mukti’s Kitchen. We were thrilled about learning to cook traditional Indian food, but had no idea what to expect. When we arrived at her door Mukti welcomed us into her warm vibrant home. As I began taking off my shoes at the door I instantly felt at home in her space. It had just snowed so most of the other people canceled leaving us with Mukti all to ourselves for a private cooking lesson.

When Mukti let us in her warm home we couldn’t help but feel comfortable. It was like going to a relatives house for the first time but you feel like you’ve been there a million times before. The class is really one-of-a-kind. You are in the middle of Brooklyn inside this Indian home learning first hand from the woman of the house how to cook authentic Indian dishes.

As you may have guessed, the core of the lesson really boiled down to SPICES. There were 3 golden rules to Indian cooking that Mukti shared with us.

    1. Masala is KING
    2. 3 C’s: Cumin, Coriander & Cloves
    3. Cook it SLOW & LOW

Onions-frying-Mukti's-KitchenThose 3 commandments accompanied with an amazingly detailed recipe packet that included all of the dishes we actually helped cook during that class, has been an incredible resource! We have made a few attempts at Mukti’s masala (Hindi word for spice), the onion pakora (fritters),  and the chole punjabi curry (my favorite chickpea dish), but it’s never come out quite as great as Mukti’s. I always have to go a little light on the spice so there’s never as much of a jab as there was that night. Once we get it down we’ll share some of our recreations.

Mukti is a phenomenal hostess and our time in her kitchen was full of laughs, hands on prep and cooking, and of course plenty of taste tests – thee best part hands down! This was the such a great experience and makes a great gift for anyone, amateurs and seasoned chefs alike. I’ve always wanted to take a cooking class and this was absolutely perfect; culture, vegan, intimate, and authentic. I couldn’t have asked for more.

We’re honestly looking forward to visiting Mukti’s kitchen again for another class! Please be sure to check out her website Mukti’s Kitchen to book a class for your next date 🙂
